This is a turn up and go service for passengers and vehicles, taking around 20 minutes. It is operated by up to four near identical vessels, MVs Sound of Scarba, Shuna, Seil and Soay. You may drive onto the next available ferry and buy tickets from the roaming Western staff, however it is usually cheaper to pre-purchase from local shops in the vicinity of Gourock or Dunoon. Remain in vehicle during crossing.

The most dependable way to cross to Cowal especially in bad weather. Western Ferries runs almost a shuttle service with regular departures throughout the day. Once at Hunters Quay (just north of Dunoon) it's a 30 minute drive to Colintraive for the short crossing to Bute.
